If my grandpa is undergoing intense radiation treatment, is it safe to be around him?

Posted by admin on Oct 9, 2009 under Radiation Treatment Prostate Cancer

What are all the risks? I’ve heard that he’s like a "walking x-ray" so it’s not safe to get too close…

He has prostate cancer and a metal plate or something inserted in there to attract more radiation…

Yes he’s safe, and no he’s not like a "walking x-ray". Whoever came up with that? The radiation is concentrated on the area in which it has to kill cells, and then kills all the fast growing cells there (including healthy ones)….but not in other people.

Treatments/statistics/sources with prostate cancer that has spread to lymph nodes?

Posted by admin on Oct 6, 2009 under Radiation Treatment Prostate Cancer

A friend was diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes only (has not spread to any other organs or bones). All I can find are sources that explain staging and treatments, but the more aggressive treatments (surgery/radiation) seem to be only for localized or low-grade cancer. I know the FDA seems to take forever to approve drugs/treatments that are being used abroad with great results; how do I find info on these types of studies done outside the US? Is it only a matter of time before his cancer spreads from the nodes at this point or is there a shot of chemo & hormones stopping it? Since it hasn’t spread any further, wouldn’t removing the prostate along with the nodes benefit him? I haven’t found anything stating surgery as an option once it spreads from the prostate. I’m sorry this is so long with so many questions! Thank you!

Beam radiation of the prostate bed and hormonal treatment are possible next actions. Chemo isn’t used until the final stages. With these therapies, he has a good five year life expectancy, because even late stage disease is slow moving. You can find case studies at
http://www.yananow.net and you can work out his statistics at
http://www.prostatecalculator.org You can use Google Scholar to research journal articles. Best of luck.

As for therapies outside the US, there are few initiatives in prostate cancer research coming from overseas. The only significant overseas therapy I am aware of is HIFU, but that’s not appropriate for a more advance case.

Is it permisable or wise to donate blood while your are being treated for prostate cancer?

Posted by admin on Oct 3, 2009 under Radiation Treatment Prostate Cancer

I have prostate cancer and my treatment is: Hormone Therapy and External Beam Radiation. Is my blood OK to use for what ever purposes blood banks use it?

I can’t help any other way at the moment and wish to continue helping others. Prior to my cancer I would do volunteer work. Now I am too tired to do the physical work I used to do. Even driving my car has been too much.
Thank you everyone, it was so silly of me to think I could donate.

Blood banks must follow Food & Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. Contact your area blood bank with this question.

Regarding the use of donated blood: By FDA regulations, if you are paid to donate plasma (this process is called plasmapheresis), this plasma is not transfused into human beings. The companies you donate to will sell the plasma to research companies and drug manufacturers.

You do not mention how long you have been receiving your radiation therapy. Your oncologist should be able to instruct you regarding fatigue–what causes it, how long it will last, what can be done to address it so you may become active again. You are a very unselfish, empathetic person to be still thinking of others in your own times of hardship–bless you.

Please talk to your oncologist. I hope your cancer is treated successfully!

European treatment centers for prostate cancer?

Posted by admin on Sep 30, 2009 under Radiation Treatment Prostate Cancer

Can anyone recommend me a treatment centre in Europe (Germany or Austria or Swiss preferably) that specialises in prostate brachytherapy. My father had external radiotherapy but we would like second opinion from urologist and radiation oncologist. Can be private, payment is not problematic

I would consider a hospital of the Hirlanden Group in Switzerland. They do have an excellent reputation.
